Energy Based Therapies

What Is Energy Therapy?

Although several ancient concepts inform it, energy therapy is a relatively new method of psychotherapy. By combining alternative Eastern healing techniques with biomedical and conventional approaches to mental health, energy therapy promotes a holistic approach to well-being. Broadly, these practices target the notion of energy in the human body. For many practitioners, energy in the realm of psychology refers to the vital force within an individual.

Belief in a universal energy system and healing energy has existed throughout history. The flow of universal healing energy has been referred to as “‘Prana’ in India, ‘Chi’ in China, ‘Ruarch’ for Hebrews, ‘Mana’ in Hawaii, and ‘Wairua’ for the Aotearoa New Zealand Maori people.

Throughout history, energy healing modalities have existed.

According to vanderVaart, Gijsen, de Wilt, and Koren, “Hippocrates referenced the ‘biofield’ of energy flow from people’s hands, the Indian Chakra system is based on energy centers in the body, and Eastern energy practices such as qigong rely on the breath to balance the body’s energy field.”

What are energy therapies? Energy therapies and Reiki healing are gentle touch therapies in which providers use their hands to support healing and wellness by balancing your energy system. Examples of energy therapies are Reiki, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch and Chakra Healing Science. These techniques share the idea that there is energy that we cannot see in and around our bodies. This energy can be shifted and balanced to create harmony, promote relaxation and aide in healing

How does energy therapy work? We are still tapping into how energy therapy works. There is a belief and proven results that stress, pain and illness can alter the body’s flow of energy, causing an imbalance in one or more areas of the system. Too much or too little energy in an area of the body can interrupt the flow of energy resulting in physical symptoms. Energy therapy providers restore your healthy energy flow by opening, connecting, and balancing your energy system.

How is energy therapy performed? Energy therapy will be performed in a gentle and safe manner. Your Monkey Healing Hands energy therapy practitioner will place their hands on, or several inches above, your body in series of locations to shift the balance and energy flow.

What will energy therapy feel like? Clients experience no pain. You may feel warmth, cold, tingling, or they may see colours. Most clients describe getting energy therapy as pleasant, relaxing and rejuvenating.

Who will perform my energy therapy treatment? Your healing treatment will be done by a provider who has completed training in energy therapy, as well as training in Reiki healing, meditation and other modalities.

How many treatment sessions are needed? The number of treatments depends on symptoms and energy flow. For mild symptoms, it’s likely 1 -2 treatments will be sufficient and effective in resolving symptoms and restoring balance. For more severe (chronic) pain, serious anxiety and depressive symptoms, PTSD or blockages / in-balance of flow, we recommend 3-4 treatments to make a significant difference and noticeable improvements.

Does energy therapy replace traditional medicine? No. Energy therapy is not a substitute for medical diagnosis and treatment. Our staff can advise on ways to include energy therapy in your treatment plan. Please talk to your medical provider about whether energy therapy should be considered for you as part of integrative medicine or complementary medicine approach / overall treatment plan.

What Are the Different Types of Energy Therapy?

Many different forms of energy therapy exist. Some of the more popular forms are listed below.

Reiki

In this form of hands-on-body healing, or palm healing, a client lies down on some comfortable surface, and a practitioner lightly places their hands on or above specific areas of the body. The belief is that energy, specifically universal life energy, flows from the practitioner, through their hands, to the client. To practice Reiki, one must receive an attune to align their energy and unblock their qi, or vital energy.

Access Consciousness Bars

A bars practitioner activates key points through Soft touch on the head area only to stimulate and attune key specific energy bars (access bars) / neuro-links to psychotherapy-based healing. in mental health conditions and enabling change in consciousness, mindset and mental strengthening.

Qigong

Qigong is a form of self-administered or practitioner-led healing that allows individuals to control the energy flowing through them.

Qigong includes relaxed and controlled breathing; slow, deliberate movements; and deep mental focusing.9

Thought Field Therapy (TFT)

This is a form of self-administered, rapid, and non-invasive therapy focused on targeted symptoms or problems.

The technique involves finger tapping on meridian points in the body, which are pathways through which energy flows, using tapping sequences specific to a particular thought field.10 This practice is limited to the upper body and hands.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

Emotional freedom techniques (EFT) is primarily a type of self-administered therapy in which the individual uses their fingertips to tap energy points on the body where there is a buildup or blockage of energy.

Tapping is done in a specific sequence, most commonly on the head and face. During tapping, the individual should focus their thoughts on the issue they want to resolve.8

Healing Touch (HT)

In healing touch therapy (HT), a practitioner places their hands above a client’s body as the client lies down. No physical contact is made. Unlike Reiki, a HT practitioner does not require an attune.

Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT)

Self-Paced DIY beginners program available

Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT) is a form of self-administered therapy that involves applying light pressure to meridian points in the body to release built-up energy or blocked energy pathways.12

While applying pressure to these acupressure points, the individual recites nine statements. The general idea of each statement and examples of each are as follows:

1. The problem: “This happened.”

2. The opposite condition: “This happened, it’s over, and I’m okay. I can relax now.”

3. The places: “All the places in my mind, body, and life where this has been stored are

healing now.”

4. The origins: “All the origins of this are healing now.”

5. Forgiveness: “I accept forgiveness from myself and everyone involved.”

6. The parts: “All the parts of me that were involved in this are healing now.”

7. Everything that’s left: “Everything that’s left about this is healing now.”

8. Choosing: “I choose ______. I completely allow and accept this.”

9. Integration: “All of this is completely integrated now, with my grateful thanks.”
